Dr. Darm Pets - Oregon Humane Society

Dr. Darm Pets - OHS logo honrizontal
For 142 years OHS has been sheltering abandoned animals, fighting cruelty and neglect, and working to build a caring, compassionate community here in Oregon.

After witnessing the brutal beating of a horse on Front Street, Dr. Thomas Lamb Eliot took action. Gathering a group of 12 prominent Portlanders on November 17, 1868, he founded one of the first humane animal welfare organizations in the country. Initially the Society focused on the plight of draft animals but within a few years advocated for the protection of children and companion animals. In fact, OHS served as Oregon's child and animal protection organization from 1881 until 1933.
With the understanding that the only way to better the plight of animals was to educate humans about respect and empathy, OHS included humane education in its goals.

Since 1883, teaching children responsible stewardship towards all animals has been an integral part of OHS's mission. And this became part of Oregon's mandate to all children in public school. In 1921, one of OHS founders and state legislator, JK Gill, proposed and saw signed into law that humane education be taught in Oregon public schools. (ORS 336.067(1)(c))

In 1916, OHS took over the city pound but dropped the contract in 1972. The reason: goals of the OHS were not consistent with the goals of an animal control agency.  Since that time, OHS has been a stand-alone, non-profit organization, operating without the assistance of government funding.
In 1918, OHS purchased the 10-acre parcel on Columbia Blvd. from which it now operates. This property is host to the oldest animal cemetery in the West. One of the most notable personalities buried in the cemetery is Bobbie of Silverton. This collie pup from Oregon went on a 1924 summer vacation with his family and unfortunately ended up lost in Indiana. The family was amazed when the lost dog returned home to Silverton six months later.

The original shelter constructed on Columbia Blvd. was lost a a fire in the late 1930s. A new facility was built in 1939 and housed the shelter's operations for sixty years.

In June 2000, OHS opened the doors to a new state-of-the-art facility that stands on the site of the old shelter. The new shelter has the capacity to house over 200 cats and well over 100 dogs.
Learn about the capital campaign that raised funds for the new shelter project, budgets, information about the corporate details about the building and other useful data in OHS New Shelter Project 2000 (PDF), prepared by Skanska USA Building.

In September 2007, OHS opened the Animal Medical Learning Center (AMLC) adjacent to the existing shelter.  The medical center is a state-of-the-art animal hospital that provides a full-range of medical services for all shelter animals. The new behavior center, open to the public, addresses the main reason why dogs come to shelter: frustrated owners who cannot deal with canine behavior.
We now serve the needs of over 11,500 animals each year. With over 100 staff members and a volunteer force of over 1,000,  OHS is dedicated to adopt 100 percent of the animals admitted to the shelter.
Building a community of compassion is our goal - through adoption of homeless pets, animal welfare legislation, humane education, abuse investigation, and community outreach and leadership.
  • Raise awareness about the plight of homeless companion animals throughout the state;
  • Inspire over 11,000 kids (K-12) per year with values-based educational techniques
  • Investigate and solve approximately 1000 cruelty cases each year;
  • Support animal welfare organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest and low performing shelters in California through our Second Chance program, i.e. 1000’s of pets come to OHS from overwhelmed shelters, due to insufficient adopters and lack of space; and
  • Build a more compassionate community
Dr. Darm, Aesthetic Medicine supports Oregon Human Society to meet these goals and he is a proud sponsor of the Oregon Humane Society.

Dr. Darm's Pets - Kitty Kitty

KITTY KITTY

I moved in behind the new family about three years ago. My old family left me behind and my new friends became my full time family. I’m totally an outside cat with the exception of coming in to eat and sleep in my bedroom every night. When the sun comes up I’m ready to hunt. I spend my days protecting the ½ acre and hunting. I love to hunt birds, mice, and of course snakes and bring them home to the family. I’m so fast I’ve caught many of humming birds and I can climb a tree in nothing flat. I don’t really have any friends because it’s my duty to keep everyone else away from my property. Both Oreo and I have agreed to stay away from each other we totally like our own space not to mention she thinks she’s the queen.

Dr. Darm's Pets - Sophie

Sophie is a very exclusive breed from Toutle, Washington. She is a Terrier, Wiener dog and Corgi  mix-aka: Terwiengy, not to be confused with Mutt! Sophie is a very active 6 year old. She enjoys playing ball, chasing her tail, treeing squirrels and snuggling. She knows all her toys by name and will retrieve them upon request. She is a nurse to our  kids  when they are sick and has brought many hours of joy to the elderly in foster care. Sophie loves to watch TV, especially  Oregon Ducks football (see picture). Our “spare parts” dog makes us laugh and feel loved at the end of every day!

This is Moe. Her birthday is Oct. 20th 2010. She is about 10 months old...DEFINITELY still a puppy. She is 1/2 boxer, 1/4 golden retriever, and 1/4 lab. She loves to snuggle and torment her older sister. Rolling in the dirt after getting a bath is one of her favorite activities. She loves trying to eat the water from the hose...if you don't spray it at her she will bark until you do! She is a great dog and I love being her mommy :)

Dr. Darm's Pets - Jake and Simba

Jake
Part Terrier part Chiwawa part Hyper Dog.  He is 7 months old and was originally in a high-kill shelter in California when the Oregonian Dog Rescue had got him and put him up for adoption.  Jake is extremely energetic, very funny and has a ton of personality.  Jake loves to tip his little wicker basket over and dump all his toys out and play with them.  He also now has an older brother "Simba" that he loves to harass!  Jake loves to shake hands with you and loves to cuddle.  He is the biggest ham the biggest lover ever!

Simba
All Pomeranian and 7 years old.  Simba was originally in a high-kill shelter in California when the Oregonian Dog Rescue had got him and put him up for adoption.  When Simba first came home he looked like a sheep dog.  Lots of matted and very long hair.  My husband took him to the groomer and they could not groom him completely because he was so mean.  Simba came home with half a haircut.  A few days later they were able to finish the job.  I kept working with Simba and now when he goes in for grooming he's a little angel.  Simba also used to sit with his back to us for the first couple of weeks after he was first adopted.  Now...he has completely turned around "literally" and is just a little cutie-pie and loves lots of attention and love!  What a sweet boy he is.

Dr. Darm's Pets - Sweetie

Dr. Darm and the Oregon Humane Society - IMG_7526

SWEETIE

I recently was very sick and my new family found me on the property and fed me. I was very skinny and had been starving for a very long time with my bones protruding. They took me to the vet and I had so many issues with my health and after $700 dollars invested they decided to try and keep me. I have my own room with a beautiful giant window to the outside with a bed, scratch stand, cat box, plenty of food and lots of love. I’m so scared, and wild from trying to survive from the raccoons that I like my new safe space. I’m very sweet but nervous. I have some health problems and appreciate the love from my new family.

Dr. Darm's Pets - Zammy

ZAMMY

I’m a full bread Pekinese dog with my own papers. I was abused and brought back to the breeder. The breeder called around because I had some mental issues and finally my new family adopted me. I was very apprehensive that they may hurt me for a long time. Once I trusted them I found that they would never hurt me and now I’m so very happy. My family purchased me a brother that was a pain at first but now Bogie and I can’t live without each other. We are a little frustrated with the weather these last few years in Oregon that Dad is now moving the family to Phoenix AZ. We are looking forward and so excited about playing outside all day without the rain.

Dr. Darm's Pets - Bogie

BOGIE

I’m the baby and I always get my way. I love, love greenies and I will do a dance anytime you offer them to me. In my opionin greenies are definitely the best thing on earth. I love to bug my brother Zammy and let’s just say I’m frisky which irritates Zammy a little, I can tell he always sits down. I play as much as I can and I bark and cry if I don’t get attention 24/7 I am the baby by the way. I was the runt and I’m so cute that I always get my way no matter what. The vet said I will look like a puppy my entire life. Like Zammy said the weather seems to be getting crummy here in Oregon with the global warming so we are moving to the desert.
